What you need to know?
Monsoon season has arrived in New Mexico, and we've been receiving our annual rainfall, which is helping replenish the streams and creeks. While we still have much of the year ahead, conditions are looking favorable for the High Desert Tenkara Campout. I'd also like to remind our travelers that Amole Group Shelter sits above 8,400 feet in elevation, so hiking and fishing can be significantly more physically demanding at this altitude. I am sure there will be more questions going forward
We have a special guest demonstration from Amanda Hoffner of Lady TenkaraBum, who will be sharing her knowledge and answering questions throughout the weekend.
We'll also be leading two optional group fishing outings:
- Saturday: We'll head to the Santa Barbara Campground area and hike a few miles into the backcountry in search of brown trout, with the possibility of catching a few native Rio Grande cutthroat trout.
- Sunday: For those interested, we'll make a guided trip to the Rio Costilla (2 hr drive but worth it) to target native rainbow trout and Rio Grande cutthroat trout.
The rest of the weekend is designed to be a relaxed, do-it-yourself experience. Since this is the first year we're hosting the event, we're keeping things informal as we learn what works best and shape the event for the future.
No reservation is required. This is a free gathering intended to bring together like minded anglers to fish, learn, and enjoy a weekend on the water.
Need to Know below:- Arrival: You may begin arriving at the campground starting at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 24.
- Water: Please bring your own drinking water, as potable water is not available on-site.
- Restrooms: Bathrooms are available at the campground.
- Fire Restrictions: We are currently under Stage 2 fire restrictions. No open flames are permitted, including wood or charcoal fires.
- Weather: Expect warm temperatures during the day, so fishing early in the morning is recommended. Evenings can get quite cool, so bring layers.
- Departure: Please plan to depart the campground by 11:00 AM on Monday, July 27.
