"The Chico" 7/8/9 ft. Zoom (Rod Kit only)
"The Chico" 7/8/9 ft. Zoom (Rod Kit only)
The "Chico Rod" was born as autumn leaves turned, inspired by the moment our renowned 12 ft Rio rod brushed the falling foliage while casting. It's a 7-9 foot zoom rod that captures the essence of New Mexico's small stream brown trout fishing and high-elevation hikes.
What sets the Chico Rod apart is its distinctive color scheme, a departure from the typical black with red or metallic banding found in Tenkara rods. Instead, it pays homage to New Mexico's rich history of unique license plates. The rod's adobe hue and straw gold rings transport you to the days of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, the Spanish explorer in search of the fabled Seven Cities of Gold.
Remaining true to our roots, we're dedicated to expanding the possibilities within the Tenkara industry.
Key Features:
- Package Contents: Each Chico Rod package includes the rod, a protective rod sock, a convenient rod tube, and additional final tip sections. We understand the frustration of a day cut short due to a broken rod.
- Rod Length: The Chico Rod offers a flexible 7/8/9 foot zoom configuration, ensuring comfort and capability for various fishing situations.
- Action: It boasts a quick 6:4 action, delivering a harmonious blend of stability and responsiveness—a perfect balance for any angler.
- Weight and Size: The rod alone weighs a mere 2.5 oz and is a compact 18 3/4 inches when collapsed.
- Weight of the rod, rod sock and rod tube is 9 oz and 20" in length.
- Shipping: Enjoy free shipping on Chico Rods and rod kits within the lower 48 continental United States, including the District of Columbia.
The Chico Rod is more than a fishing tool; it's a tribute to New Mexico's history and a promise of an exceptional Tenkara experience.
Version 2.0 was a color change more than anything because we love the way that this rod performs.
- Rod tube was updated to adobe color and yellow writing.
- Rod was updated to yellow writing and the name Chico was added
- Rod sock lettering was also updated to yellow.
I usually reserve reviews for a product after I have had adequate time to see how versitle the product is, but The Chico is the real deal. It has handled every situation I have thrown at it and it has presented Kebari and dry flies with equal aplomb, which is no small compliment. In the tight quarters I am throwing flies, the Chico has shown. Last week in an open pool, the first presentation with a dry yielded a sweet little Rainbow on a small stream. I did not expect the precision from the Chico, but it has been the perfect addition to my Tenkara arsenal. I highly recommend this for tight quarters, and you can't beat the versatility of being able to extend the rod to cast in more open waters. The Chico is a winner in my book.
Derek we have talked a little bit and I am happy that you gave us a chance over some of the bigger companies in the market. We are very proud of the Chico rod and have had nothing but good feedback but from someone of your caliber and we could not be happier hearing it from you. Derek, I hope we can chat more and you know, I will always reply as soon as I can.

I purchased the Chico looking for a shorter, faster action rod for targeting relatively large fish in tight quarters. In the first couple weeks I have landed numerous cutthroat in the 11-13in range as well as a surprise 14in brown. The Chico has performed wonderfully in these situations. I am able to get quick, solid hooksets that have drastically reduced the amount of branches I smack or fling my fly into. I often utilize a bow cast in these creeks and find that with a little practice the Chico excels at shooting my flies into those hard to reach spaces. As others have mentioned the stiffer action means this rod works quite well with nymphs and weighted flies.
Jacob, you are an amzaing Tenkara fisherman and we are so happy to have you be part of the RMT family. Enjoy the upcomming season and thank you so much for the pictures.

I was very pleased with the action of the rod; it performed well for tight-quarters winter nymph fishing and I'm sure it'll perform well under other conditions.
Thank you Lance, we love getting into tight spots with this one also.
