The "Chupacabra" Tenkara rod only
The "Chupacabra" Tenkara rod only
At Rocky MTN Tenkara, we have a tradition of explaining the motivation behind our rod designs and names. The inspiration for this one comes from the legendary creature, rumored to be a hunched beast with spiky fur and a venomous bite - the cryptic known as "Chupacabra". The moniker means "goat sucker" in Spanish, but this creature has made a name for itself in Mexico, the southern US, and particularly in Puerto Rico.
"Growing up in the southwest, specifically the alien capital of the world, I'm no stranger to tales of strange creatures and sightings of the unknown. Who hasn't taken their unwitting friends snipe hunting or heard the eerie story of La Llorona? Who hasn't heard a rustle in the bushes while out on a far-off trail, or felt a chill while fly fishing in a river, waiting for a bite?
In a place where UFO sightings are as common as tumbleweeds, the chupacabra is just another local celebrity. This legendary beast, said to prey on livestock, has been the star of countless campfire stories and late-night debates.
Whether it's real or not, the chupacabra represents the wild, mysterious spirit of the southwest – a perfect blend of fear, fascination, and folklore that keeps us all looking over our shoulders... and up at the stars. Keep your eyes peeled and your lines tight - Casey"
Come hang out with us at Rocky MTN Tenkara, where we're all about the stories! If you've reached out to us before, you know we always respond with insightful replies and genuine truths. The Chupacabra may be just a myth, but for us, it's a way to start a conversation and pay tribute to our New Mexico roots through an epic tale we can't wait to share with everyone.

I got the Chupacabra as a great 10.5'-12' zoom rod as a workhorse option for my larger streams and small rivers I focus on. So glad I went Rocky Mountain Tenkara as I know I have made not only a great purchase but got the opportunity I feel to have made a great friend going forward. I know there are alot of good Tenkara rods out there but if you don't look at Rocky Mountain Tenkara your missing out.
Kelly, Thank you for the picture and we are so very happy to have you review our Chupacabra rod. We have had the pleasure of chatting online and if your ever in the New Mexico, I would love to take you to some of our wonderful spots.
Solid fast action rod with great looks. I have tried multiple types of casting line and this rod seems to do best with light PVC type line for me but does cast fine with level line. This rod is stiff enough to nymph with and spine feels strong enough for fish up to about 18” but I have not caught one in that range with it yet. Rocky Mountain Tenkara is a small New Mexico based company that was very responsive to my communications. Buy with confidence.
Thank yo so much and I agree with everything that you said about using PVC line. Look for us to bring more of those items in the shop like PVC line and hybrid lines that can work with these beefy rods a little better. Happy fishing and thank you
